The Socorro Independent School District proudly showcased the exceptional talent and creativity of its student writers at SISD’s 38th annual Literary Anthology celebration this spring.
The district recognized 90 first-place winners of the Literary Anthology Writing contest on May 4 at Socorro High School. Students in grades kindergarten through 12th submitted their best writing in various genres, including poetry, essays, narratives, short stories, graphic novels and correspondence. First, second, and third-place winners had their work published in this year’s SISD Literary Anthology.
Eastlake High School sophomore Josephine Bustillos took first place for her portrayal of a character with eyes and a nose but no mouth. Bustillos explained that the character represented people who don’t see themselves as who they authentically are and only see themselves as just a face.
“I feel very happy,” Bustillos said. “I've never had anything like this happen, so it's very exciting to know that this is (published).”
With a nod to Star Wars Day, which was celebrated on May 4, this year’s Literary Anthology theme was Writing Strikes Back.
Irene Mendez, SISD instructional officer for secondary Reading Language Arts, said the contest's judging is a yearlong process. It begins with the evaluation of students' writing at the campus level. The first-place winner from each campus is then judged at the district level, where first, second, and third-place winners are chosen.
Mendez said the contest allows students who do not participate in UIL or athletics, showcase their talent.
“Sometimes a true talent comes from writing, and so this is an opportunity for those talents to be displayed and showcased at a district level,” Mendez said.
