The Socorro Independent School District celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony April 25 for the new Student Activities Complex, which is being constructed as part of the district’s Bond 2017 program.

The 64,000 square foot facility will hold some 6,500 people for various athletic, student and staff events. The new facility, along with the existing SAC, will allow the district to host more games on staggered schedules to better serve the students of SISD and the community.

“With our growing district and growing success, I know that this an important and highly anticipated project for Socorro ISD,” said SISD Superintendent Nate Carman, Ed.D. “It has been beautifully designed, and it will be inspiring to see the progress of its construction.”

Current SISD students and athletes were excited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony, and many are eager to see future generations compete at the new facility.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be part of this today,” said Osvaldo Rubio, a senior at Pebble Hills High School. “I unfortunately won’t be in high school when it’s completed but I am definitely excited for the future students to come and experience it.”

With more than 47,000 students in SISD, the new facility will bring many more opportunities and benefits to the district and will be enjoyed by many stakeholders and visitors in the community.

“It’s really exciting because nice facilities make you feel better about what you are doing,” said Isabella Wolf, a sophomore at Socorro High School. “I feel like the new facility will motivate me as an athlete, and hopefully motivate other athletes in or out of the district.”

The complex will include a new athletic field, concession areas, locker rooms, and offices and conference rooms for athletics and fine arts. The facility was designed by HKS Architects Inc. and Banes General Contractors is building the complex.

“El Paso is my home and to have the opportunity to design and build a stadium for the district is an awesome opportunity,” said Fred Ortiz, an architect with HKS Architects Inc. “The value of these facilities is grand, and to think that the students can benefit from them makes it even more valuable.”

The new facility will be adjacent to the current SAC and is projected to be completed by May 2023.
