Student-athletes in the Socorro Independent School District signed their letters of intent in the 2022 spring semester to continue their academic and athletic endeavors at various colleges and universities next school year.

The students excelled in various sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, track and field and wrestling and earned numerous athletic accolades and recognitions. Each signing drew proud parents, family members, friends, teammates, and coaches who celebrated with the successful student-athletes.

Alexis Gabrielle Carrasco signed with Waldorf University in Iowa for wrestling. Carrasco was a state qualifier in 2021 and earned All-City first team 185 lb. in 2018-19, All-City second team 215 lb. in 2019-20 and first team 215 lb. in 2020-21. Carrasco is a three-year varsity letter winner and varsity starter (2019-2022). Carrasco plans to study psychology.

“Thank you to my mom and dad for always supporting me, even when I was at my lowest,” Carrasco said. “Overall, my whole family has always supported me, so thank you.”

Carmelo Corral signed with Adams State University in Colorado for track & field and cross country. Corral was a state qualifier in cross-country for 2018, 2019, and 2021, a regional qualifier in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and an area qualifier in the 1600 and 3200 meters in 2022. Corral also earned All-District in 2020 and 2021 and was ranked second all-time on the school’s record list for the 1600 meters with a time of 4:16.17. Corral was also ranked third all-time on the school’s record list for the 3200 meters with a time of 9:36.18. Aside from his athletic accolades, Corral is ranked in the top 100 of his class academically.

“This is a very humbling feeling today,” Corral said. “I can only say thank you to everyone who has supported me since day one, I hope I have made you proud.”

Jared Laverty signed with the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio for track & field and cross country. Laverty was a state qualifier in cross-country for 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, a regional qualifier in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, a two-time district champion in the 800 meters in 2021 and 2022, an area champion in the 800 meters in 2021, an area qualifier in the 800 meters in 2021 and 2022, an area qualifier in the 1600 meters in 2022, and a regional qualifier in the 800 meters in 2021. Laverty earned All-District cross-country team in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and is ranked first in Texas for the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.24. Laverty is also a school record holder in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.24 and ranked third all-time on the school record list for the 1600 meters with a time of 4:17.40. Laverty is the only Americas High School athlete to qualify for the state championships all four years in high school.

“I want to thank everyone for their support, including my family, friends, coaches and teachers,” Laverty said. “Since my younger years as a freshman, they have always believed in me.”

Aaron Saenz signed with Lamar University for track & field and cross country. Saenz was a state qualifier for cross-country in 2019, a regional qualifier in 2019, 2020, and 2021, an area qualifier in the 800 meters in 2021 and 2022, a regional qualifier in the 800 meters in 2021 and an All-District performer in 2019. Saenz is ranked fifth all-time on the school record list for the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.76 and ranked sixth all-time on the school record list for the 1600 meters with a time of 4:24.43.

“None of this could be possible without my amazing coaches,” Saenz said. “Thank you for guiding me into the right direction and helping me become successful in my career.”

Imahni Brown signed with Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas for volleyball. Brown was a team captain, and she was an integral part of the team for the past three years. Brown exhibits a great work ethic, which led to her being a large contributor to the team and her 2021 All-District defensive player of the year recognition.

“Thank you to everyone for supporting me and my vision since day one,” Brown said. “I have always tried to strive for better in my life and I promise, that will not stop now.”

Jordan Hernandez signed with Cochise Jr. College in Douglas, Ariz., for basketball. Hernandez is a point guard and has a 78-15 record as a varsity player. Hernandez is a three-time district and bi-district champion, a two-time area, and regional quarterfinals champion, a two-time sweet 16 qualifier, a three-time district most valuable player, a three-time All-Region player, a first-team All-City player in 2021 and an El Paso Times Co-Player of the Year for 2022.

“It’s really an honor to be signing with Cochise College today,” Hernandez said. “I am truly blessed to have the support system I’ve had here at Americas these last four years.”

Celeste De La Rosa signed with Sul Ross State University for soccer. Her senior year she was varsity captain. De La Rosa’s athletic accolades include the title of MVP Goalkeeper of the Year and 1st Team All-District 1-6A. Her academic accomplishments include earning the Triple A Award and a $1,000 scholarship from the Standing with Estela Casas Foundation, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and remaining in the Top 10 percent of her class.

“Thank you to my parents for being my main supporters, my rocks, both on and off the field,” De La Rosa said. “None of this would’ve been possible if it weren’t for them.”

Mariana Chavez signed with Sul Ross State University for soccer. She is a varsity team captain, and her athletic accolades include 1st Team All-District her junior and senior year. Academically, Chavez has a 4.0 GPA and is in the Top 10 percent of her class.

“Thank you to my family, friends and peers for always supporting me on and off the field, but most importantly in my education,” Chavez said.

Evan Avitia signed with Hutchinson Community College for track & field and cross country. Avitia’s accomplishments include 2021 Cross Country regional qualifier, placing fifth in the 400-meter run at the 2022 district championships, placing sixth in the 800-meter run at the 2022 district championships, ranked 13th All-Time on the School Record List for 800-meters with a time of 1:59.78, and is one of only 14 runners at Americas to break two minutes in the 800-meters.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me since day one,” Avitia said. “Running at the next level after high school has always been a dream of mine and I am so happy I am finally achieving it.”

Isabella Medina signed with Western New Mexico University for track & field and cross country. Her athletic accolades include 2018, 2021 and 2022 regional qualifier, 2021 and 2022 area qualifier, 2022 area runner-up, ranked 2nd All-Time on the School Record List for 800-meters with a time of 2:20.96, Americas High School 2022 Female Athlete of the Year, and Female Cross Country 2022 Triple A Award winner.

“Thank you to my parents, my coaches, my teachers and my friends for this wonderful opportunity,” Medina said. “Without them, none of this would have been possible.”

Eastlake student athletes signing

Eastlake High School

Clarissa Gutierrez signed to continue her soccer career playing for the University of Texas at El Paso, where she will study criminal justice. She is a midfielder, has been a four-year varsity player and has been a team captain for the last two years. This year she scored 13 goals and 5 assists. She was 1st Team All-District 1-6A and El Paso Times 1st Team All-City Team her junior and senior year. Gutierrez also was named TASCO All Region Honorable Mention by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches.

“I am thankful to use this platform, so that it may inspire other athletes to know that they can do anything that they set their hearts and their minds to,” Gutierrez said.

Deserie Herrera signed to continue her soccer career playing for Sul Ross University, where she will study physical therapy. She is a midfielder, has played varsity throughout her entire high school career and has been a team captain the last 2 years. This year she scored 15 goals and 10 assists. She was named 1st Team All-District 1-6A her junior and senior year and El Paso Times 1st Team All-City back-to-back years.

“I’m excited and honestly nervous,” Herrera said. “But this is a new chapter of my life and a new challenge, and I am ready to conquer it.”

Sofia Molinar signed to continue her soccer career playing for Sul Ross State University, where she will study criminal justice. She is a defender and has been playing soccer for 15 years. She was a varsity starter all four years and a varsity captain her junior and senior year. Molinar was named 1st Team All-District, 2nd Team All-District and an Honorable Mention during her high school career.

“To my coaches here at Eastlake, thank you for standing by my side and for believing in me when I couldn’t believe in myself,” Molinar said. “You pushed me to be the player I am today, and I would not have this opportunity if it weren’t for you.”

Lizeth Tolentino signed to continue her soccer career playing for Cisco College, where she will study to become a veterinarian technician. She is a defender and has been a starter since she was a sophomore. Tolentino was named 2nd Team All-District this past season.

“Thank you to my mom and dad for always supporting me, even when I was at my lowest,” Tolentino said. “Overall, my whole family has always supported me, so thank you.”

Ximena Gonzalez signed to continue her soccer career playing for Jacksonville College, where she will study aerospace engineering. Gonzalez is a defender, goalie, and, on occasion, a forward  winger when needed. Her senior year she played as a defender.

“The biggest thanks I have to give for this moment is to my grandpa for introducing me to the sport when I was 8 years old and he taught me everything about soccer,” Gonzalez said. “He helped me find my passion.”

Omar Gio Moran signed to continue his soccer career playing for Angelina College where he will major in business. He has been a member of the Eastlake varsity team for 4 years and is a team captain. Moran has been instrumental in guiding the Falcons to many championships, including Elite 8 (2021) and Sweet Sixteen (2022) appearances. He has been named to the All-State Team, is a multiyear All-District MVP, and was named El Paso Times All-City Player of the Year his junior and senior year. He also played in the TASCO senior All-Star game. Moran scored 114 goals in 4 years becoming the leading goal scorer at Eastlake High School.

“Thank you to my family, teammates and coaches because without you I would not be here,” Moran said.

Bryan Aguirre signed to continue his soccer career playing for Angelina College where he will major in accounting. He has been a member of the varsity program for four years and is a team captain. Aguirre has been instrumental in guiding the Falcons to many championships, including Elite 8 (2021) and Sweet Sixteen (2022) appearances. He was named 1-6A All-District MVP in 2022, 1st Team All-City, 1st Team All-State, and played in the TASCO senior All-Star game. Aguirre scored 17 goals his senior year, 8 in the 6A State Playoffs.

“Thank you to my teammates because I couldn’t have done it without you and to my coaches for always pushing me,” Aguirre said.

David Garcia signed to continue his soccer career playing for Blinn College where he will major in engineering. He has been instrumental in guiding the Falcons to many championships, including Elite 8 (2021) and Sweet Sixteen (2022) appearances. He is an All-District, All-City and All-State player. He scored 17 goals and had 25 assists his senior year. Garcia earned Academic All-State his senior year.

“I would like to thank my parents for believing in me, without them I would not be who I am,” Garcia said. “I’m also thankful to my coaches for not only making me a better player but helping me become a better person.”

Justin Quinonez signed to continue his soccer career playing for Sul Ross State University where he will major in engineering. He has been a starting defender for the Falcons for two years. Quinonez has been instrumental in guiding the soccer team to district championships, including Elite 8 (2021) and Sweet Sixteen (2022) appearances. He is also an All-District player. 

“Thank you to my family and coaches for all their support,” Quinonez said.

Alfonso Blancas signed to continue his soccer career playing for Northwest College where he will major in engineering. He is a defender for the Falcons. Blancas was instrumental in guiding the soccer team to district championships, including Elite 8 (2021) and Sweet Sixteen (2022) appearances. He is also an All-District player.

“I want to say thank you to my family for pushing me and not letting me give up,” Blancas said. “I couldn’t have done it without your love and support.”

David Gamez signed to continue his baseball career playing for Galveston College where he will major in kinesiology. He is a two-year varsity letterman, who plays centerfield and pitches. Gamez played an instrumental part in the team’s 2021 playoff run.

“I can’t believe I get the chance to go on and play college ball and that I’ve accomplished that goal,” Gamez said.

Isaiah Chavez signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Chavez is a two-year varsity letterman with a 3.9 grade point average and many other accolades. Chavez plays offense and special teams and had 27 catches for 430 yards and for touchdowns this season. Chavez earned 1-6A second team All-District in 2020 and 2021, 1-6A Academic All-District in 2021 and second team selection in 2021 for the Texas High School Coaches Association.

“Thank you to all my coaches, my parents, my friends for helping me get to this point in my life,” Chavez said.

Elijah Uribe signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Uribe is a three-year letterman, who played running back for two years and has played multiple positions for the Falcons this year and leaves the program as one of the most decorated players in the program’s history. Uribe has many accolades, including first team 1-6A All-District, first team All-City, 1-6A Most Valuable Player, El Paso Offensive Player of the Year, THSCA Honorable Mention All-State Running Back, THSCA Honorable Mention All-Academic, 1-6A District All-Academic Team, and week eight’s Texas Ford Tough Player of the Year. Uribe’s stats also include 329 carries for 2,585 yards and 35 touchdowns, 47 catches for 609 yards and seven touchdowns, and 36 pass completions in 76 attempts and eight touchdowns. Uribe also had four games this season where he threw a touchdown pass, ran for a touchdown, and caught a touchdown pass. Uribe is involved in the veterinarian program, along with several other programs on campus with a 4.0 GPA.

“I am so thankful for this opportunity of a lifetime,” Uribe said. “I could not have done any of this without the support of many.”

Daphne Garcia signed with Edmonds College in Lynwood, Washington for basketball. Garcia came to Eastlake High School her sophomore year and made a big impact. Garcia made varsity her junior year and was a two-year starter for the Lady Falcons trading time between the post and power forward positions. She was frequently called on to take big shots and make big plays and never backed down. Garcia’s senior year, she was second in scoring and led in three-point field goal percentage shooting a strong 33 percent from behind the stripe.

“I know this achievement was not easy,” Garcia said. “But I got it done, and I am proud to say that I am now about to live a longtime dream of mine.”

Kayla Quintana signed with Texas A&M International University for volleyball. Quintana is a three-year varsity letterman and earned All-District 1-6A Co-Outstanding Setter in 2021-2022, All-District 1-6A second team in 2020-2021, and All-District 1-5A Honorable Mention in 2019-2020. Quintana joined the Eastlake varsity volleyball team her sophomore year and ended the season with nine kills, 15 aces, 108 digs and 374 assists and helped lead her team to a 2-5A Bi-District Championship. Quintana ended her junior season with 16 kills, 13 aces, 70 digs and 323 assists. The 2020-2021 season, Quintana helped lead the team to its first 6A Bi-District Championship title and tied for second place in the 1-6A District. Quintana ended her senior year with 85 kills, 12 blocks, 19 aces, 238 digs and 882 Assists.

“I feel so good that my hard work has finally paid off,” Quintana said. “This is one proud moment no one can ever take away from me.”

Ivan Anguiano signed with Sul Ross State University for baseball. Anguiano is a two-year varsity letterman, a pitcher, and an honor student. Anguiano’s peers say he is a great teammate and has been a major contributor to the Eastlake varsity baseball program. Anguiano’s coaches say he is a great example of a role model.

“I am so grateful to make you all proud today,” Anguiano said. “It was not an easy ride, but it was fun, and I know I will continue to make people proud of me.”

El Dorado student athletes signing

El Dorado High School

Alyssa Barragan signed with Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas for softball. Barragan earned a 2022 2-5A All-District Honorable Mention and was named to the 2022 All-Academic Team.

“Thank you to my parents for being my main supporters both on and off the field,” Barragan said. “None of this would’ve been possible if it weren’t for them.”

Isaiah Garnica signed with El Paso Community College for baseball. Garnica earned All-City Baseball Player of the Year in 2021 and Player of the Year in 2-5A in 2021. His overall GPA is a 99.7, and he will represent El Dorado High School at the El Paso Hall of Fame Banquet for Male Athlete of the Year.

“I’m excited to start this next chapter in my life and I just hope to make my family proud,” Garnica said.

Rio Hernandez signed with Heartland Community College in Illinois for soccer. Hernandez was a team captain for two seasons and was named All-District for three years.

“This sport that I’ve been playing for 10 years has given me many friendships, memories, wins and losses, experiences, and more,” Hernandez said. “Thank you to all my teammates and coaches from throughout my soccer career, I’ve learned many things from each and every one of you.”

Sherlyn Avalos signed with Heartland Community College in Illinois for soccer. Avalos was a 2nd Team All-District selection.

“Thank you to my family, friends and peers for always supporting me on and off the field, but most importantly in my education,” Avalos said.

Cristean Estebane signed with San Antonio College for basketball. Estebane was named 2-5A Co-Offensive MVP and earned an El Paso Times All-City Honorable Mention.

“I’m excited to play at the next level and to start this journey,” Estebane said.

Alejandro Jaurrieta signed with San Antonio College for basketball. Jaurrieta accolades include a 2-5A All-District Honorable Mention.

“Thank you to the whole El Dorado High School basketball program for the great 3 years I’ve been with them,” Jaurrieta said. “I am thankful overall to the Empire for the education I’ve obtained here and to my teachers who were nice enough and caring enough to help me in the classroom.”

Aileen Alvarado signed with New Mexico State University for track & field. Alvarado, a four-year varsity track and field athlete, is a three-time regional qualifier, has earned five district titles (two high jump, two triple jump, and one 4x200 m relay), is a three-year regional qualifier, and has been an honorable mention at All-State. She ended this season with the title of top high jumper in El Paso. Academically, she has a 3.8 GPA.

“To my coach, thank you for believing in me since day one,” Alvarado said. “You were the biggest part in my success and helped make me one of the best triple jumpers in the city.”

Deborah Lozano signed with West Cliff University for track & field. Lozano ran for the varsity track team all four years of high school and is part of the school record holding 4x200 meter relay team. Lozano is ranked fifth all time for 100-meter hurdles and fourth all time for 300-meter hurdles. He earned multiple district championships in long jump, 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays.

“I am very excited but also nervous for this new chapter of my life,” Lozano said. “I’ve always wanted this since I was a little girl, and I’m so happy it is finally happening.”

Alexandro Villegas signed with West Cliff University for track & field. Villegas competed in the varsity track team for three years and is a five-time qualifier for the National Junior Olympics. Villegas has totaled 27 triple jump wins throughout his high school career.

“Everyone at El Dorado has always shown me great support since I was a young freshman,” Villegas said. “I am so grateful to have them in my life for this next chapter of my life.”

Ricardo Portillo signed with Central College in Iowa for football. Portillo is a three-year varsity letterman, earned All-District Honorable Mention. Portillo is also a Stansbury Certified Quarterback Competition Winner, associated with the all-star showcase, a competition among the best quarterbacks in El Paso.

“I am very grateful to my coaches for helping me get my name out there to different colleges to see my talent. I wouldn’t be in this step of my life if it weren’t for them,” Portillo said.

Anthony Domingue signed with Buena Vista University for football. Domingue is a three-year varsity letterman, earned first team All-District, and participated in the 915 Showcase All-Star game.

“I know I am going to make everyone proud out there,” Domingue said. “From my family to my coaches, to my teachers and friends, I will make them very proud.”

Brianna Hernandez signed with Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, NC, for volleyball. Hernandez is a three-year varsity letterman and earned District 2-5A first team All-District middle blocker in 2019-2020, District 2-5A first team All-District outside hitter in 2020-2021, District 2-5A volleyball Co-MVP, and Greater El Paso Girl’s Coaches Association’s volleyball star recognition in 2021-2022. Hernandez is also a Region 1-6A Bi-District champion in 2018-2019, a Region 1-5A Bi-District champion and District 2-5A volleyball champion in 2019-2020, a Region 1-5A Bi-District champion in 2020-2021, a Region 1-5A Bi-District champion and a District 2-5A volleyball champion in 2021-2022. Hernandez will study criminal justice.

“I’m excited to start this next chapter in my life and I just hope to continue to make my family proud,” Hernandez said.

Montwood High students that signed

Montwood High School

Yamil Oaxaca signed with the University of Texas Permian Basin for football. Oaxaca is a three-year starter, a team captain, earned first team All-District, second team All-City Wide Receiver, and was an El Paso All-Star selection. Oaxaca will study business.

“To my coaches and teammates, thank you for standing by my side and for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself,” Oaxaca said. “You pushed me to be the player I am today, and I would not have this opportunity if it weren’t for you.”

Victor Villa signed with Oklahoma Panhandle State University for football. Villa earned second team All-District defensive lineman and was an El Paso All-Star selection. Villa will study criminal justice.

“Everyone’s support in my football career has been phenomenal,” Villa said. “I just want to thank everyone for their continuous support and for believing in me.”

Sam Valadez signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Valadez is a three-year starter, a team captain, earned first team All-District Center, second team Academic All-State, and was an El Paso All-Star selection. Valadez will study animal science.

“It’s surreal to know I will be able to study for free while playing my favorite sport,” Valadez said. “I am so humble to know that, and I will not let anyone down.”

Joseph Cepeda signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Cepeda is a three-year starter and earned honorable mention All-District safety. Cepeda will study criminal justice.

““To my coaches, my teammates and family, thank you for believing in me since day one,” Cepeda said. “You were the biggest influences in my success and helped make me the best I could possibly be.”

Ariana Garcia signed with Our Lady of the Lake University for softball. Garcia is a team captain and earned Academic All-District, and second team All-District center field/catcher. Garcia will study biology or pre-medicine.

“Thank you to everyone for supporting me and my vision since day one,” Garcia said. “I have always tried to strive for better in my life and I promise, that will not stop now.”

Antonio “Tony” Torres signed with El Paso Community College for baseball. Torres is a three-year letter winner, earned first team All-District and All-City pitcher/second baseman, and was recognized as TexasHighSchoolBaseball.com’s top 50 players to watch. Torres will study criminal justice.

“All I can say is this is only the beginning,” Torres said. “The adventure is just starting, and I cannot wait to show them what I’ve got.”

Aden Morales signed with New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell for golf. Morales is a three-year letter winner, varsity team captain and earned All-District. Morales will study criminal justice. He is the first Montwood High School golfer to earn a full athletic scholarship.

“It feels great to be able to put my sport in the spotlight today,” Morales said. “I want to make the Montwood golf community extremely proud.”

Jasmine Deschamps signed with the Texas Tech University cheer team. Deschamps is a two-year varsity cheerleader with a seven-year career. She has been a National Cheerleaders Association champion for three years, she earned second place in the Summit Cheer Competition, she earned best jumper in eighth grade at SSG. Manuel R. Puentes Middle School and was a finalist for Cheer Worlds Competition of April 2022. Deschamps will study pre-nursing.

“This moment is one that I will remember forever,” Deschamps said. “To be able to have a special ceremony for signing to play at the next level is very humbling, and it makes me realize how much they (Montwood) care about us.”

Zuri Zubia signed with the University of Texas at El Paso for beach volleyball. Zubia has 191 career kills, 48 blocks and 90 digs. Zubia will study speech language pathology.

“I’m just so grateful to have so much support behind me,” Zubia said. “I hope I can continue making people proud and I am ready for this next step.”

Clarissa Galindo signed with Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas for volleyball. Galindo has 45 career kills, 21 blocks and 48 digs. Galindo will study kinesiology and health education.

“I’m glad I could make you all proud today,” Galindo said. “It was not an easy ride, but it was fun, and I know I will continue to make people proud of me.”

Brandon Nunez signed with Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas for soccer. Nunez is a first team All-District 1-6A and second team All-Region Midfielder. Nunez will study mechanical engineering.

“Thank you to my mom, my dad for always supporting me, even at my lowest points in life,” Nunez said. “Overall, my whole family has always supported me, so thank you.”

Caleb Montes signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Montes is a second team All-District 1-6A linebacker with 135 career total tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions. Montes will study kinesiology.

“I can’t wait to be playing at the college level,” Montes said. “I hope I can make my coaches and family proud out there.”

Dominic Navarro signed with Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas for wrestling. Navarro is a regional qualifier and a three-time All-City selection. He will study special education.

“This is very humbling to know how many people really support me,” Navarro said. “My parents are the rock to my life. I want to make them extremely proud parents.”

Aremie Steele signed with Grand View University in Iowa for wrestling. Steele is a district champion, a regional champion and she won third place at the UIL state meet. She also was named All-City female MVP. Steele will study criminal justice.

“I feel really good to know I am representing my team out there,” Steele said. “Not many girl wrestlers can say they are competing at the college level, and it makes me proud that I am one of the few.”

Daisha Villa signed with Justice College in Arizona for soccer. Villa is a goalkeeper who earned 1-6A goalkeeper of the year in 2020. She also was named to the All-City first team.

“I just want to say thank you to all my teammates, coaches, teachers and most importantly, my family. I know I will make you all proud out there,” Villa said.

Nathan Benitez signed with the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell for golf. Benitez placed top 15 at the District 1-6A tournament. He will study pre-med.

“It is an honor to be able to represent Montwood golf out there,” Benitez said. “I am thankful to Coach Mena, my teammates and my parents for always being there for me.” 

Alexa Rangel signed with the University of Texas at El Paso for track & field and cross country. Rangel is a three-sport athlete, a four-year letterman, and a three-year team captain. Rangel was an area qualifier, a four-time regional qualifier, a two-time El Paso Times All-City second team, El Paso Times All-City honorable mention, a school record holder in three events, 2021-2022 student of the year and a Terry Scholar. Rangel will study nursing.

“I’m very excited and more honored to be able to run at the D-1 level, especially right here at home” Rangel said. “I have so many people to thank, including my family, who helped me reach this point in my life.”

Steven Kyle Ortega signed with the University of Texas at El Paso for cheer. Ortega was a three-sport athlete who also played football, basketball, and track. He earned first team All-District safety and had 30 tackles, three forced fumbles, and one interception last year. Ortega will study kinesiology.

“I am so humbled and blessed to be part of such an amazing community,” Ortega said. “The amount of support I received is just overwhelming, I hope to continue making people proud.”

Blanca Arciniega Palma signed with Ranger College for volleyball. Palma’s career stats include 91 blocks, 33 aces, 241 digs, and 343 kills.

“I am very excited but also nervous for this new chapter of my life,” Palma said. “I’ve always wanted this since I was a little girl, and I’m so happy it is finally happening.”

Luis Martinez signed with Wayland Baptist University for wrestling. Martinez is a two-year varsity wrestler and a two-year regional qualifier. Martinez will study forensics.

“I just want to say thank you to my family and coaches for their help and support through this journey,” Martinez said.

Nikki Solis signed with Vernon College for softball. Solis had a .402 batting average, 41 hits, 15 runs, and 25 RBI’s. Solis was the 2022 team captain, Montwood High School’s pitcher of the year, and she earned first team All-District.

“To my coaches and teammates, thank you all for standing by my side and for believing in me when I couldn’t believe in myself,” Solis said. “They have pushed me to be the player I am today, and I would not have this opportunity if it weren’t for them.”

Alan Cadena signed with New Mexico Highlands University for football. Cadena is a two-year varsity starter, a second team All-District 1-6A offensive lineman, academic All-District, and academic All-State teams. Cadena will study psychology.

“I am very excited to continue to do what I love, to continue to grow as a person and as a player who will gain new experiences as they go through life,” Cadena said. “This is the moment where I become the person I am meant to be, and I thank everyone for being a part of who I am.”

Pebble Hills High School

Michaiah Cordova signed with Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas for soccer where she will pursue a degree in physical therapy. Cordova is a four-year varsity starter and team captain. Her athletic accolades include 1st Team All-District her freshman year, All-District Midfielder MVP her junior year and 1st Team All-District her senior year. Cordova currently holds the record of all time goal scorer for the girls’ soccer team at Pebble Hills High School.

“I want to thank my family for supporting me and pushing me to do my best,” Cordova said. “I particularly want to thank my mom; she is the reason that I play.”

Nyla Hyman signed with Widener University in Pennsylvania for volleyball where she will pursue a degree in nursing. She will attend the university under the Presidential Merit Scholarship, a campus grant, and the Texas State Alumni Award. Hyman was part of the Spartan Volleyball Team for two years, where she played as a defensive specialist. She is a multi-sport athlete who participated in hockey, basketball, and has been a competitive gymnast for the last nine years. Her academic achievements include competing at the state science and engineering fair and placing 2nd and the district science fair. Hyman is also a part of the school’s varsity choir group, where she assisted in their sweepstakes win at UIL and went on to the state competition for solo and ensemble. She is a part of the STEAM and athletic training program at Pebble Hills. She has maintained a 3.8 GPA and AB honor roll.

“I knew this would take a lot of work, but to see my efforts not only gain a spot on the varsity team, but on an NCAA collegiate team proves that it's never too late to start and accomplish what you set your mind to,” Hyman said.

Sydney Martin signed with Genessee Community College in New York for volleyball where she will pursue a degree in physical therapy. Martin has been involved with the program for all four years of high school, where she has played the positions of center and defensive specialist. Her academic achievements include being involved in NHS and AVID, and she was an AVID peer tutor, all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA.

“Congratulations to my fellow athletes on their commitment to continue their athletic and academic careers at the next level,” Martin said. “I wish you all the best of luck on your future endeavors.”

Angel Vazquez signed with Wabash College in Indiana for soccer where he will pursue a degree in psychology. Vasquez has been on the team all four years of high school and has been a varsity player the last three years. His athletic accolades include 2nd Team All-District his sophomore year, 1st Team All-District his junior year and All-District Offensive MVP his senior year.

“All the hard work and dedication that I put into this has paid off,” Vasquez said. “But the journey hasn't finished.”

Osmel Padilla signed with the University of Northwestern Ohio for soccer where he will pursue a degree in auto tech. Padilla has been on the team all four years of high school and has been a varsity player the last three years. He was named 1st Team All-District his junior year.

“A huge thank you to my teammates for their love and support over these past four years,” Padilla said. “I’ve made beautiful memories with every single one of you and you all became more than just my teammates, you are all my brothers.”

Katelyn Calderon signed with Park University in Gilbert, Ariz. for basketball where she will pursue a degree in media communications. Calderon is a three-year varsity player, during which she was instrumental in helping the team achieve the title of District Champions. Her other athletic accolades include 1st Team All-District Player, District Co-Defensive Player of the Year, an El Paso Girls’ Coaches Association All-Star MVP, a member of the All-Star Team, and she was selected to the statewide TGCA/THSC All-Academic Team.

“I’m excited to be signing to continue to do what I love, to continue to grow as a person and as a player who will gain new experiences as they go through life,” Calderon said. “This is the moment where I become the person I am meant to be, and I thank you all for being a part of who I am.”

Manny Chavez signed with Beloit College in Wisconsin for football, where he will pursue a degree in psychology. Chavez earned 2nd team All-District his junior year and was a Greater El Paso Football Showcase Senior All-Star.

“This moment is beyond me, and I think it’s just starting to set in,” Chavez said.

Gustavo Renteria Jr. signed with Fringe University for wrestling and football where he will study education. In wrestling, Renteria is a two-time District Champion and a two-time participant in the state competition for wrestling. In football, his accolades include All-District, All-City, and senior All-Star.

“I am thankful to all my coaches for helping me to know what it means to really work hard and to put all of myself into everything I do both on and off the field,” Renteria said.

Fernando Herrera signed with New Mexico Highlands University for football. Herrera is an outside linebacker who earned second team All-District in 2020 and 2021. He is a three-year starter and was voted outstanding back for the Pebble Hills varsity football team.

“I’m super excited to be able to move on to this next step in my life,” Herrera said. “Not everyone can say they had the chance to play their favorite sport in college, and I am so grateful for that.”

Victoria Aguayo signed with Sul Ross State University for basketball. Aguayo earned Class 6A All-Region, All-City, and 1-6A Offensive Player of the Year. She also earned Texas Girls Coaches Association and Texas High School Coaches Association All-State Academic. Aguayo is a three-year starter in the Pebble Hills varsity program and a three-time All-District player.

“I want to thank my teammates for their love and support over these past three years,” Aguayo said. “I’ve made beautiful memories with every single one of you and you all became more than just my teammates, you are my family now.”

Socorro High School

Isaiah Edgerton signed with Wayland Baptist University for football. Edgerton plays cornerback and earned 1-6A All-District second team in 2020.

“First, I thank God for all the blessings he’s laid over my life,” Edgerton said. “I thank my family for all the support and never-ending love they have shown. I thank all my high school coaches for helping me grow on and off the field. Go Pioneers!” 

Omar Flores signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Flores plays fullback and middle linebacker and is Socorro’s defensive captain. He was selected to play in the Greater El Paso Football Showcase All-Star game.

“I am so humbled and blessed to receive not one, not two but three offers to continue my education and play football at the next level,” Flores said. “I am proud to say I am from Socorro, and I will continue my career at Sul Ross State University.”

Humberto Moreno signed with Sul Ross State University for football. Moreno plays defensive back and wide receiver. He was part of the Socorro Early College and has a 4.3 grade point average.

“I’d like to thank God for the amazing opportunities he has presented before me,” Moreno said. “I’d also like to thank my family for always staying by my side, and my coaches for the amazing four years of high school football.”

Amaris Delgado signed with McMurry University for track and field. Delgado is a shot and discus thrower and is part of the Socorro Early College and the Health Professions Academy. Delgado also played volleyball and basketball at Socorro High.

“I am extremely happy to continue my academic and athletic career,” Delgado said. “I will try my absolute best to represent El Paso, and much more, Socorro, as well as I can.” 

Ana Rojas signed with El Paso Community College for track and field and cross country. Rojas earned a bronze medal in the 800-meter run at the Hanks 2022 Excalibur Invitational track meet.

“I’m so grateful to be able to continue my running career here at EPCC,” Rojas said. “I know I will make everyone proud, especially my family, they mean the world to me.”

Yanitza Olivares the University of Texas at Permian Basin for track and field and cross country. Aside from athletics, Olivares is senior vice president of community service and an officer for the Texas Association of Future Educators at Socorro High School.

“I have always loved long distance running, since I was a little girl,” said Olivares. “I’m so grateful for my coaches who helped me reach this level in my life. I am also grateful for my family for being on my side every step of the way.”

Alejandra Medina signed with Fort Lewis College for softball. Medina earned 1-6A first team All-District and was named an El Paso Times All-City Team Honorable Mention.

“There are no words I can say that could ever fully cover the amount of gratitude and love I have for my coaches, my family, and my teammates, I’m just truly thankful for all of them from the bottom of my heart.”
