Students participating in summer graduation

Socorro Independent School District celebrated high school graduates with a summer commencement ceremony Aug. 23 at Americas High School.

The students from the district’s six comprehensive high schools and Options High School were honored and recognized at the ceremony by their school administration and district representatives, as parents, grandparents, family, and friends cheered them on.

The Class of 2022 graduation began with special entertainment from the Americas High School mariachi group Los Pioneros and the school’s orchestra played “Pomp and Circumstance” to lead the procession of graduates.

SISD superintendent Nate Carman, Ed.D. congratulated the graduates and wished them well on their future endeavors.

“Congratulations to our fantastic Class of 2022,” Dr. Carman said. “There is no better feeling for a student than to have the sense of accomplishment and success on graduation day, so I am extremely excited to share this moment with you. Graduates, I know you are prepared for a great future with the endless opportunities we provided you in Team SISD, but there are endless opportunities in life, too. Stay ambitious, make good choices and I know that you can seize those opportunities for a lifetime of success.”

High school principals led the ceremony and SISD board president Eduardo Mena certified the graduating class.

Students walked up to proudly accept their high school degrees, as members of the crowd filled with family, friends, school staff and faculty cheered them on and took photos and video of the graduates.

Alma Castillo, an Americas High School graduate, said that the last four years have been difficult for her, so she was happy to participate in the summer graduation, which meant so much to her.

“I was really nervous as we walked in and emotions were high, but this is a huge accomplishment,” Castillo said. “Though I wasn’t originally able to graduate with my class in June, I was able to graduate today, and I am super grateful for that.”

Diego Villarreal, an Eastlake High School graduate, said some students, like himself, struggled to get to this milestone moment but that they nonetheless deserved the recognition.

“This was a very gratifying moment and felt well earned,” Villarreal said. “It’s a self-fulfilling moment and we did it.”
