new-field

Socorro High students, Board Trustees, Superintendent and staff and ribbon cutting

The Socorro High School community happily celebrated the newly resurfaced athletic field at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 12 at the school.

The celebration included a welcome by school principal Ignacio Estorga, who introduced Socorro High School students, coaches, teachers, administrators, SISD superintendent, board trustees, district administration, and special guest, Socorro City Mayor Ivy Avalos.

“Thank you to the district for everything you do for Socorro High School,” Estorga said. “Thank you for making this happen for our mighty Bulldogs.”

During the ceremony, the drum line and cheerleaders performed on the field pumping up a crowd of beaming athletes.

Socorro High School student-athletes, SISD Superintendent Nate Carman, Ed.D., and board trustees threw the football and kicked a soccer ball to ceremoniously mark the first use of the resurfaced field, which will be used for practice and games.

“I am extremely excited to be celebrating this great new athletic playing field which was resurfaced especially for you, our outstanding students and staff,” Dr. Carman said. “Thank you to Dr. Estorga, coaches, faculty and staff, for your fantastic work and for inspiring our students to achieve their highest potential in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.”

SISD Board President Eduardo Mena also shared a few words about celebrating the new field.

“What a wonderful afternoon in Bulldog Nation. This is a gorgeous new facility and I love the Socorro Bulldog logo in the middle of the field,” Mena said. “On behalf of the SISD Board of Trustees, we are honored to officially launch the use of the new field in the Socorro community.”

Athletic coordinator and head football coach Edward Cano was thankful for the new facilities and what it meant for student-athletes.

“Not once did the kids ever complain about playing on the old field, which makes them so much more deserving of this new one,” Cano said. “Our athletes are going to do great things here.”

Bryan Rodriguez, a senior and soccer player at Socorro High School, was overwhelmed with emotion from the celebration of the new turf.

“This is great, and it makes me happy because we needed a new field,” Rodriguez said. “It’s good to know that the district is focusing on helping students overall, both in academics and athletics.”

SISD Board Vice President Pablo Barrera also was happy to present the new playing field for the school.

“This is long overdue. You are getting the opportunity to receive this,” Barrera said. “This was something the board members put together and cabinet, so I would like to thank them, as well. You, students, get to reap the fruits of this improvement. So, please enjoy it."
