Montwood students, Board and staff at ribbon cutting

Montwood High School shined bright with pride as student athletes, coaches, teachers, administrators, SISD superintendent, board trustees, and district administration celebrated the newly resurfaced athletic field with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 21 at the school.

“This is a great day for Montwood High School, and I am extremely proud to be celebrating with you today,” said SISD Superintendent Nate Carman, Ed.D. “We want all the best facilities for students at Montwood High School and across the district, which includes this fantastic new field.”

The celebration included a welcome by school principal Carlos Guerra as student representatives from athletics, dance, cheer, and band gazed upon the new and improved field.

“Here at Montwood High School we have a tradition of excellence and today adds to that tradition of excellence,” Guerra said.

SISD Board of Trustees President Eduardo Mena, whose children attended Montwood High School, spoke about how the field and other updates is boosting pride at the Emerald City.

“This is a great new field,” Mena said. “Looking at the improvements made at this school makes me proud to be a Ram dad.”

Student-athletes participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony and some of them pocketed a piece of the green and white ribbon as a memento for the historic moment.

Mia Aleillar, a junior and defense/center back player for the girls’ soccer team, said she was happy to be invited to the event and to represent her team.

“Having this new field is amazing,” Aleillar said. “It’s nice to see all the athletes come together and celebrate this great new field as a community.”

Montwood High School student-athletes, Dr. Carman, and the board trustees also kicked a soccer ball and passed a football to ceremoniously mark the first use of the field.

Angel Ruelas, a senior and middle linebacker for the Montwood Rams, said the new turf means new opportunities for student athletes like himself.

“I am excited that I still get the chance to enjoy this amazing new turf my senior year,” Ruelas said. “This new field will allow us to build our team. It’s a great gift to Montwood High School.”
