A family in the Socorro area received a special surprise when their loved one returned from Navy boot camp and arrived at Socorro Middle School to see her siblings and cousins.
Jazlynn Herrera, a yeoman in the United States Navy, is the oldest of five siblings. Two attend Socorro High School and two attend Socorro Middle School with their cousins.
Jazlynn Herrera has been at bootcamp in Chicago since May and said she missed her “babies” as she refers to her brothers and sister.
“I was super nervous to surprise them and get home to my babies,” Jazlynn Herrera said. “This was worth it, doing what I’m doing and then getting to see them.”
Johannie Herrera, a seventh-grade student at Socorro Middle School, is Jazlynn’s little sister. She was moved to tears when she saw her older sister walk through the doors of the cafeteria at lunchtime.
“It was a relief because it’s been a while, so it’s great to see her again,” Johannie Herrera said. “She is like a second mother to me so she is a big part of my life.”
Johannie said she is grateful to be in a school like Socorro Middle School that supports her home life as much as her academics. Jazlynn agreed and was thankful for the compassion from Team SISD.
“I'm thankful to the principal and the school for allowing me to make this special for them and for their support,” Jazlynn Herrera said.
