Socorro Independent School District students who are in financial literacy and dollars and sense classes attended the 2022 Job Con Sept. 13 at Eastlake High School.

More than 2,500 sophomore students, along with their teachers, were in attendance.

The event included more than 80 employers from some of the most in-demand industries in the area, such as El Paso Electric, the United States Coast Guard, El Paso Animal Services, the Department of Health, and the United Parcel Service.

Students had the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with employers, learn about exciting career paths, and get advice on how to take the necessary steps toward their dream job after high school.

“This event provides our SISD students an opportunity for career exploration and proves how we go above and beyond in providing students with college and career opportunities,” said SISD CTE business and industry coordinator Brenda Gonzalez. “We represent Team SISD throughout El Paso, loud and proud.”

Students learned what is required of them to succeed in their desired career path, such as what certifications are needed or other skills and education.

Ashley Cervantes, a freshman at Socorro High School, said the event was a good avenue for students to ask questions from employers.

“It’s important to know what they expect and learn more about what they are about, so that you can figure out what it is you want to do,” Cervantes said.

The Job Con also provided them with information on apprenticeship and internship opportunities that are available in the region.

Jorge de Avila, a sophomore at Montwood High School, said he was happy to see the variety of careers available to students all in one accessible setting.

“This is a great event to give students an opportunity to start thinking about what they want to do as a career and see all their different options,” de Avila said.

Genesis Davila, a sophomore at Pebble Hills High School, said she appreciates the opportunity to connect with employers and ask questions.

“This is a good experience because not everyone knows what they want to do, so I think it is a really good thing for the district to put this event on for us students,” Davila said.
