The Socorro Independent School District invited the SISD community to the final walkthrough of the classic Socorro High School on Oct. 29, 2022.
About 200 Socorro High School students, teachers, alumni, and Team SISD stakeholders strolled through the halls of the original school one last time before the area was razed to allocate the space for new facilities in the renovation of the school.
The reconstruction of Socorro High School is part of the SISD Bond 2017 program.
"I'm here today to visit the 1200 halls one last time," said Jody Miranda, SISD instructional technology specialist, who graduated from the high school in 1982. "There (are) a lot of memories here in this building, and we're really happy that the kids are getting something just like they have at Pebble Hills and Eastlake (high schools)."
The walkthrough began at the original main foyer and continued through the areas of the classic building. SISD Police Services Sgt. Gabriel Castaneda, a 2002 Socorro High School graduate, gave tours of the library, 1200 Hall classrooms and the cafeteria.
Visitors took pictures, signed their names on a memory wall, and reminisced about the good old days with friends and former classmates.
Ana Maria Serna, a retired teacher from Bill Sybert School and a Socorro High School alumna, celebrated her 41st high school reunion at the event.
"This is amazing because we wanted to come one more time and to see our old side of the high school," said Serna, who graduated in 1981. "So many memories … of when we used to ditch, and we had smaller classes, and everybody knew everybody. This is really a very good idea. Personally, I loved it. (It is) something that I will never forget."
The event also allowed Jesus Rodriguez, a graduate from the class of 1983, to reconnect with people he hadn’t seen in nearly 40 years.
“They’ve come from everywhere, and they are here taking pictures and reminiscing all the years, and we haven’t even gotten to the lockers yet, but I love it!”, said Rodriguez, an SISD employee for more than 30 years. “It’s something they planned very well, and (I’m) happy that they did it. I love Socorro. I’m (a) Socorro Bulldog all my life, and I bleed red.”
Progress continues on the remaining 2017 bond projects, including Eastlake Middle School, the new Student Activities Complex, and a maintenance office facility, which are projected to be completed on schedule.
