Local business and school liaisons participate in expo

Partners in Education and school liaisons in the Socorro Independent School District came together for the district’s annual Partners in Education Exhibition, where local businesses and nonprofit organizations share information on the services and resources available to campuses, Sept. 9 at the SISD District Service Center.

The eighth annual event allowed SISD business partners and school liaisons to meet, learn about the businesses in partnership with the district, offer support, ask questions, and exchange information to set up appointments for the school year to plan fundraisers or activities.

SISD’s public relations specialist and PIE coordinator Maya Kirtley said the partners in education and the liaisons anticipate the annual event because they know it’s a one stop shop to network.

“With all the success we have as a school district, our Partners in Education really play an instrumental part in the academic growth of our students, whether it be an incentive for honor roll or an opportunity for our business to show off the careers that are available to students, it is a testament to the great work we’re able to do here at SISD,” Kirtley said.

A total of 50 businesses participated in the annual event, among them was Peter Piper Pizza, Barnes & Noble, the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest, FirstLight Federal Credit Union, and the Socorro Education Association.

MaryLou Rocha, the education coordinator for the El Paso Holocaust Museum & Study Center, said it is important to connect with the youth in the city and that she is thankful that the partnership with SISD is an avenue for that.

“We love being able to connect with SISD because it is a growing district with great ideas, so we are happy to be a team together,” Rocha said.

Adriana Arredondo, a field marketing representative for Applebee’s Grill and Bar, said she looks forward to the annual PIE event because she is a firm believer in helping the community and this event allows for that.

“These are our favorite events just to be able to connect with all of the liaisons and campus coordinators because as a school district SISD really does so much for students that it gives us pride to be able to come in and support those initiatives,” Arredondo said.

The school liaisons also cherish the connection they have with the Partners in Education and say that it is a significant part to helping them better serve students.

“The partnership between all of our stakeholders is crucial to student success and that the Partners in Education are the heart of what we do,” said Jacob Ramirez, El Dorado High School student activities director. “With them we are able to provide our students with endless opportunities.”
