Socorro Independent School District students in grades fourth through eighth grade attended the annual Career Awareness Showcase Nov. 5 at Pebble Hills High School.
The event is designed to help younger students learn about the different high school endorsements, such as STEM, business and industry, public service, arts and humanities, and multidisciplinary studies, and explore future career opportunities in business and industry.
“It’s never too early for students to start thinking about careers,” said George Thomas, director for Career and Technical Education. “We provide them with the opportunity so they can see what is offered to them and what pathways they can follow upon going into high school.”
During the engaging event, children and their parents had the opportunity to network with current SISD students in the district’s early college programs, advanced academics academies, and who are taking free college courses.
Participants also were able to interact with numerous business and industry representatives to hear about their high-demand jobs and careers.
Fernie Hernandez, a parent at John Drugan School, attended to see the programs available at SISD and said his daughter showed interest in the SATA program and the Aztec Architecture Academy.
“It was a great experience, we got to learn about all the programs that are offered and what they specialize in,'' Hernandez said.
Over 800 students attended the event to interact with representatives from the various CTE programs the district offers such as, the Health Professions Academy, the Fire Science Academy, the Libertas Academy, and more.
Brenda Gonzalez, the CTE coordinator for business and industry, said this event is all about helping students prepare for their future.
“We invite parents to attend with their students so they can be equally educated in what we offer as a district and supportive of what their child does, which makes it more likely for these kids to follow through with the endorsement they ultimately select,” Gonzalez said.
