Students participating in virtual event

Socorro ISD high school students and their parents attended the Virtual Preparing for College Forum via Microsoft Teams Aug. 31 where they had the opportunity to hear from high school counselors about the importance of preparing for the transition to college.

Students gained access to tools and resources they can use as they prepare to enter post-secondary education.

Ashley Newell, a senior at Pebble Hills High School, said she was excited to hear about what the event had to offer.

“I feel like it helped me know what I needed to do to prepare myself for college,” Newell said.

The forum provided important information about the college application process and financial aid.

Attendees also received helpful tips on writing college essays, preparing for college interviews and more.

El Dorado High School senior Destiny Jaquez said she learned about the forum through her counselor who encouraged students to attend to know what tools they need for the next chapter in their education.

“I attend because after I graduate from El Dorado, I plan to attend the University of Texas at El Paso. So, I just wanted to learn what to expect and how to save money,” Jaquez said. “It felt good to be able to learn together with my mom, who attended with me.”

The SISD School Counseling Department will host a military collegiate forum on March 2 to assist students who are interested in applying to academies for the U.S. Coast Guard, Army, Merchant Marines, Navy and Air Force.
