Hueco and Burlington staff at ribbon cutting

Teachers and students at Hueco Elementary School in the Socorro Independent School District received an early Christmas gift from major off-price retailer Burlington Stores.

Through its partnership with the national non-profit organization, AdoptAClassroom.org, Burlington donated $5,000 toward school supplies to Hueco Elementary to commemorate the November opening of its new El Paso store at Eastlake Marketplace, 13371-2 Eastlake Blvd.

“(This gift) says that (Burlington) really cares for the community, they care about Socorro, and they care about our students,” said Melissa Parham, SISD assistant superintendent for elementary schools.

A representative from AdoptAClassroom.org contacted school administrators and helped to secure the donation for Hueco Elementary, which will provide funds for new supplies for each teacher’s classroom. The teachers will use the funds on several new classroom items to help Hueco Elementary achieve academic excellence and continue providing endless opportunities for its students to succeed.

“This $5,000 donation from Burlington will help support the teachers to support the kids,” said Hueco Elementary School Principal Greg Hatch. “Teachers can purchase basic supplies or items to enhance lesson delivery in the classroom or supplies to help do a project. It will really enhance teachers’ ability to deliver great student-centered learning in the classroom.”

Each of the school’s 40 teachers received $125 to buy classroom essentials from AdoptAClassroom.org for the school’s 560 students.

Each time Burlington opens a new store, Burlington celebrates by adopting and funding a local school in their store community.

Blake Oliva, Burlington district manager, said the donation is one way the retailer gives back to the communities it serves, especially since most of its talent is from the local area.

“In El Paso, we’ve got almost 1,000 associates and managers that work for us that have all come out of these public schools, so we believe that it is very important,” Oliva said. “We know that a lot of times teachers spend money out of their own pockets to provide for these students and we want to do our part to support them.”
