Students participating in pinning ceremony

The Libertas Academy at Americas High School hosted a special pinning ceremony to welcome 50 new students to the program on Oct. 20 at the SISD District Service Center.

Libertas is one of the Socorro Independent School District’s advanced academic programs, designed to prepare students for career and college readiness in law, government, and public administration.

Amanda Zubiate Stevens, the Libertas law instructor, said the pinning ceremony was the students’ first step into the academy. Over the next four years, students will be introduced to the principles of law and government, legal research, and writing. They also will have the opportunity to obtain real-world experience through internships in law and government.

“They are part of a program unlike anything else in the United States,” Zubiate Stevens said. “They have the ability to be part of a legal and government program that is teaching them fundamentals of law and policy at an early age of being a freshman.”

Students were pinned by friends and family members who cheered them on during the ceremony.

“It was a wonderful experience,” said Nathaly Villezcas, a first-year student at Americas High School. “I’m glad I was able to have my family here to see what I will become. I was always interested in law. I want to become a lawyer. I’m glad I chose this because now I know my path is clear.”
