SISD students participating in Marchfest

High school marching bands from the Socorro Independent School District and the El Paso area competed in the 29th annual SISD Marchfest on Oct. 15 at the Students Activities Complex.

The marching bands demonstrated their musical and marching talent on the field for judges from across the country. The bands were rated based on a national competition standard with a preliminary finals format.

SISD fine arts facilitator Macka Jones said that Marchfest is one of the biggest band competitions of the year.

“It’s awesome to see all the different components, such as dance, music and theater, come together to make one great big show,” Jones said. “It’s great to see these kids putting their best foot forward and the crowd's response to their performance.”

Socorro schools made the final cut, including the Pebble Hills High School marching band which earned third place in the competition, Eastlake High School marching band was fourth place and Socorro High School marching band took eighth place overall.

"It was a great feeling hearing Socorro's name called for finals,” said Jocelynn Rodela, a senior at Socorro High School and band president. “The past three months' work left the whole band feeling so accomplished and we went into finals with determination and excitement. The future for this band is brighter than ever!"

The Pebble Hills High School marching band also won the Outstanding Drum Major and Outstanding Color Guard awards.

“I had an amazing experience at this year’s Marchfest,” said LoriAnn Kaudaissy, a senior and member of the color guard at Pebble Hills High School. “Being able to put all our hard work out on that field and to share this memorable moment with my family was the best feeling ever. It is always great to get many opportunities to work together as a team and show our dedication and grit out there on the field.”

Nineteen bands in Class A, B and C performed throughout the day at the SAC, after which finalists went head to head and the event concluded with an award presentation honoring the winners.
