Students participating in Virtual Advanced Academy Night

The Socorro Independent School District is committed to assisting students learn about their opportunities for future academic excellence. Eighth-graders were invited to the two-night Virtual Advanced Academy Nights event in November to hear about the district’s premier advanced academic academies.

The SISD Career and Technical Education Department conducted the informational meetings to help students decide if the academies are the right path for them.

“This event gives them the freedom to explore the different options,” said SISD CTE career facilitator Veronica De Avila. “It’s extremely valuable as it allows them to explore the different opportunities available to them based on their interests.”

Incoming SISD high school students and incoming high school students living in the SISD boundaries that are not attending SISD schools may apply for the advanced academic academies in the Socorro district.

The district offers the Health Professions Academy at Socorro High School, Synergi4 Academy at Montwood High School, Libertas Academy at Americas High School, Aztec Architecture Academy and International Baccalaureate program at El Dorado High School, School for Advanced Technical Applications (SATA) at Eastlake High School, and Sparta Business Academy at Pebble Hills High School.

In addition, incoming freshmen man apply for the early college high school programs, the Fire Science Academy at Socorro High School or join the NJROTC in high school.

Over 2,000 students registered to attend the virtual two-night event where representatives from each academy presented a description of their four-year program during the virtual meeting.

Students and parents had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the academies during breakout sessions.

Sofia Gutierrez, an eighth-grade student at Desert Wind School, said she was interested in the architecture program and early college programs, and was impressed with the assistance the district offers students so that they can ultimately have a better transition into college.

“I think it’s great that these programs will help me take years off of my time in college and save money,” Gutierrez said.

She attended the event with her father, Alberto Gutierrez, who was impressed with the event’s informative sessions.

“This is something progressive that can help students get their feet wet and point them in the right direction to not only transitioning into high school, but also starting on their college education journey,” Alberto Gutierrez said. “I’m glad that the district is providing this great opportunity for the kids.”
