Portraits of the counselors from four SISD counseling teams

Four school counseling programs in the Socorro Independent School District were recognized by the American School Counselor Association as a Recognized ACSA Model Program (RAMP).

Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle, Jane A. Hambric, James P. Butler Elementary, and Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary schools received the prestigious honor based on their commitment to delivering school counseling programs aligned with the ASCA National Model framework.

SISD Director of School Counseling, Tammi Mackeben said she was very proud of the four Team SISD school counseling programs that were named Recognized ASCA Model Programs for the 2022-2023 school year.

“These innovative school counseling programs work tirelessly to provide academic, social, emotional and career services for students,” Mackeben said. “Each program sets high standards for students to assure they are prepared for college, career or military and life beyond; as well as assuring students have the social-emotional skills needed to prosper and have a successful life.”

The four schools are among only 100 schools nationwide that were selected for this recognition.

The counselors on each team are Cristina Nunez and Rachel Pena from Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School, Yvette Harper and Angie Lopez from Jane A. Hambric School, Mandie Martinez and Angie Torres from James P. Butler Elementary School and Adriana Escobedo and Patsy Carrillo from Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary School.

In addition, Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School was one of eight schools in the nation that was named a RAMP School of Distinction.

The Clarke counselors said they are proud to represent their campus and Team SISD.

“We are truly humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve our students and community,” Pena said. “Counseling is our passion and with the guidance from our directors and the ASCA model, we have been able to build a comprehensive school counseling program that truly allows us to make a difference and change lives. Earning the RAMP award and School of Distinction is just the icing on the cake!”

The ASCA National Model framework helps guide school counselors to develop school counseling programs that include data-informed decision making, are delivered to all students systematically, include a developmentally appropriate curriculum focused on the mindsets and behaviors all students need for postsecondary readiness and success, to close achievement and opportunity gaps and result in improve student achievement, attendance, and discipline.

These schools will be honored during a special ceremony at the ASCA annual conference in July in Atlanta.
