The Socorro Independent School District conducted its first ever PE Showcase for all elementary students in April at Eastlake High School.
The ‘80s themed event showcased some 600 elementary school students from across the district participating in fitness, teamwork, and physical activities, including synchronized routines.
Parents and families were invited to the showcase to see the engaging activities students are participating in during their physical education classes at their campuses.
“I really liked that my parents could come watch me and see what I am doing when I’m at school,” said Isabella Espinoza, a fourth-grade student at Col. Ben Narbuth Elementary School.
Isabella’s mother, Melissa Espinoza, said it was fun to see her daughter perform activities she does during her PE class and how active the students get to be.
“I feel really happy because kids are always doing things like being on their iPads, and I think they definitely need to be more active,” Espinoza said. “So, it is a fun and healthy way for them to get the exercise they need.”
Daniela Chavez, a fifth-grade student at John Drugan School, performed a basketball routine to the ‘80s hit song “You Got the Beat.”
“It was fun and awesome to be here performing with all my friends,” Chavez said. “I can’t wait to do this again!”
Justine Farmer, physical education and health facilitator for SISD, said that the event was a great way for students to showcase what they are doing on a daily basis at their campuses and to highlight the PE programs.
“Health and wellness are so important, especially in a young student’s life, so we decided to put on this showcase,” Farmer said. “We are really excited, and we hope to grow this and that it will be something that everyone looks forward to next year.”
