Volunteers attending event

Team SISD recognized its outstanding volunteers for their significant contributions to the district and its students at the annual spring SISD Volunteer Recognition and Awards luncheon at the Starlight Event Center.

The district honored the Adult Volunteer of the Year, Adult Military Volunteer of the Year, Top Five Parent Organization Groups, and Elementary and Secondary Volunteer of the Year District Winners.

Rachel Tarango, coordinator of SISD’s Parent Volunteer Program, said the awards luncheon celebrated volunteers from the community, including Fort Bliss, for their hard work and the service they provide to the schools.

“These volunteers they’re not paid at all,” Tarango said. “The work is free, and everyone benefits, not only the students but the district itself.”

The more than 9,700 registered volunteers in Socorro ISD contributed 79,577 service hours during the 2022-23 school year, which added up to $2.3 million worth of service.

During the ceremony, superintendent Nate Carman, Ed.D., and the board trustees thanked and congratulated the 51 Adult Volunteer of the Year winners from each campus.

Carol Hambric from Paso Del Norte Fine Arts Academy was named District Elementary Volunteer of the Year. Hambric, an educator for 32 years, has volunteered at the school for two years. Now retired, she is always eager to help the teachers, school monitors, or fine arts department in any way she can.

“Principal (Adalberto) Garcia allowed me to expand in my responsibilities as a volunteer, and I feel like I’ve blossomed,” Hambric said.

Delia Medina from Montwood High School received the District Secondary Volunteer of the Year award. Medina has volunteered at SISD for 15 years, the last two years at Montwood High School.

“I like to volunteer because I enjoy it,” Medina said. “I like to serve the students and I also learn a lot from them.” Other winners included Barbara Davis from Col. Ben Narbuth Elementary School, who was recognized with the Adult Military Volunteer of the Year award. The Top Five Parent Organization Groups were the Socorro High School Band Booster Club, Elfida P. Chavez Mighty Moose PTA, Montwood High School Robotics Boosters and Horizon Heights Elementary School Parent Hive.
