The STEM Magnet program has existed at Montwood High School since 1999. In an effort to attract students to focus on math and science in two of the oldest high schools in the district, Socorro ISD implemented magnet programs in each of its 2 high schools at the time; Montwood High School started SYNERGI.
Since then, students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math were placed in a cohort where they were allowed to work together. Biomedical Engineering became the focus. Over time the magnet program was split into 2 specialties: Engineering and Biomedical Science.
Engineering students take a variety of engineering elective courses, participate in extracurricular activities together, and participate in advanced math and science throughout their four (4) years at Montwood High School.
