The Socorro American Federation of Teachers (AFT) awarded scholarships to six deserving students from the Socorro Independent School District to help them pursue their higher education dreams.
Socorro AFT President Veronica Hernandez presented each student from the district’s comprehensive high schools with a $500 scholarship on behalf of the Socorro AFT and Texas AFT during a special SISD Board of Trustees meeting on Jan. 23. This marked the first year that the AFT awarded these scholarships.
“We’re here tonight because it is our great privilege in partnership with our state organization, the Texas American Federation of Teachers and the partnership with SISD, to present each and every one of these amazing students a $500 scholarship for the pursuit of higher education,” Hernandez said.
The following students were selected from a pool of 327 applications.
Angie Gurrusqueta, Pebble Hills High School
Paloma Del Rio, Socorro High School
Sergio Cordova, Americas High School
Angela Long, Montwood High School
German Velarde, El Dorado High School
Trinity Graves, Eastlake High School
Congratulations to these amazing scholars for seizing their opportunities in Team SISD!
