SISD Elite 8 Graphic with teacher winners

The Socorro Independent School District proudly announced the eight finalists for the district's Teacher of the Year program during the 2025 Elite 8 Teachers of the Year Reception on Feb. 19. The finalists included four educators from elementary schools and four from secondary schools, representing the district’s exceptional teachers who shape the minds and hearts of students through their passion and dedication.

The 2025 Elite 8 finalists include elementary educators Laura Chaparro (Mission Ridge Elementary School), Justine Farmer (Vista Del Sol Environmental Science Academy), Susana Hernández-Coronado (Ernesto Serna Fine Arts Academy) and Edith Miranda (Sgt. Roberto Ituarte Elementary School); and secondary school teachers Jared Gamez (Americas High School), Michael Neff (Montwood High School), Melissa Peña (SSG. Manuel R. Puentes Middle School) and Isabel Ramirez (Eastlake Middle School).

The announcement was made during the annual event recognizing all 50 campus teachers of the year for their contributions in making a difference in students’ lives.

Socorro ISD Interim Superintendent James P. Vasquez congratulated the Campus Teachers of the Year and thanked administrators, school staff and families for their support of the teachers.

“It is a tremendous achievement to be selected as a Campus Teacher of the Year and we are so happy to honor you today,” Vasquez said. “All of you demonstrate professionalism and exceptional skills as educators, but what really sets you apart is your passion for teaching and your heartfelt compassion for your students.”

The top eight teachers were initially chosen by their colleagues as Campus Teachers of the Year. Following that, they underwent an interview selection process with a committee made up of district stakeholders. They will now advance to the next stage of the program to compete for the district Teacher of the Year award in both elementary and secondary education categories.

Farmer, a Pre-K to 5th grade PE teacher, was named one of four Elite 8 teachers in the elementary category. She said this recognition has confirmed the dedication she puts into her work with her students.

“It just shows how hard work can pay off and that if you really do love your job and have passion for it, people can see it,” Farmer said.

Gamez, an 11th-grade US history teacher at Americas High School, said that being named a finalist for secondary teacher of the year felt like winning the lottery.

"There's a lot of great teachers here. I'm in a room full of amazing teachers. And so, I'm just happy to be a part of that. I'm truly blessed to be a part of this, and so, I appreciate Socorro ISD," Gamez said.

The top two SISD winners will be named during district’s annual Teacher of the Year Gala on May 9 at the El Paso Convention Center.
