In an epic showdown, the Americas High School boys’ soccer team punched their ticket to their first Final Four appearance after defeating El Dorado High School in the UIL boys’ soccer playoffs on March 31.
The matchup was the first time in the history of the Socorro Independent School District that two of its teams faced off against each other in the Texas UIL Elite 8 5A Division soccer playoffs at the Student Activities Complex (SAC) II. Additionally, the victory was the first regional final championship for the Trailblazers, marking another major milestone in the school’s history.
Jair Olivares, head coach of the Americas boys' soccer team, said that his players showed they were ready to advance to the next round during the match. He said that the team’s theme, "Unidos," which means "united" in English, has helped promote teamwork and contributed to their success.
“I think that's what is keeping us going because we're together, we're a family,” Olivares said. “We're putting all our efforts together to make it happen. So, if we can continue with that same mentality, I think we're going to do great things.”
Americas will compete in the state semifinals on April 4 against the winner of the match between Walnut Grove and Heritage high schools, which is scheduled for April 1 in Midland.
