Comprehensive career development is usually implemented in ways that are developmentally appropriate and thus will vary from level to level. Suggested methods of delivery at the high school level are listed below.

High School Preparation
The greatest challenge and the greatest need for career development programs occur at the high school level. The challenge is finding time in the busy student schedule to implement career development activities in groups. The need is that graduation plans dictate certain educational selections that require guided reflection and decision-making.

Teachers may not only promote careers relevant to their discipline, but also incorporate career development activities of general value, e.g., researching a career in an English class. Sometimes teachers, in collaboration with school counselors, actually provide mini-units within classes.

Career software, available on all campuses, can help to sort the voluminous amount of educational, occupational, and career information available. Job shadowing and real work experience are often parts of the experiential career development process.

Employability skills, job finding, and job keeping skills are all part of the competencies which students must master as they consider their future role in the world of work. Resume writing, interviewing skills analysis, team problem solving are but a few of the abilities that young people need to take to the workplace. Job shadows and industry visits can further connect the school to future employment. High schools must accept responsibility for assuring that every student has the opportunity to be prepared to achieve economic success.*

The Princeton Review.Com - A superb college search site that allows you to set the parameters (your interests, majors, public or private school, size, etc.) and then gives you a list of schools that fit your profile

C3 Apply - This is a very quick and easy, user friendly site that allows you to point and click the factors to consider in choosing a college. It is a wonderful college search program and lots of other information about college preparation.

My College Guide - Another comprehensive web site for the college bound student. Rankings, searches, tips on admission essays, early admission advice...you can find it all here.

Kaplan's College Search - Here is another comprehensive site for the college bound student. They will, however try to sell you some of their test prep programs.

College Link - A very comprehensive website for the college bound student.

Schools in the USA - You can search schools by majors, get help with choosing a career and much more.

ACT - Register online, take some practice test questions, check out the national test dates, and try their test prep program. Also have information about the PLAN test and other ACT information.

Kaplan Testing Services - A well known commercial test prep company that has classes all over the country for the ACT, SAT, and many other tests. They also have a parent newsletter that has tips for the entire college admissions/fin aid process.

PSAT Information - The benefits for students: It will help you to start thinking about college. “Practice makes perfect”. On average, students who take the PSAT earn high scores on the SAT than those who do not since the tests have same formats, directions, sample questions, and question types. You can get your first look at how your academic skills compare with those of a national group of college-bound students. By taking the PSAT, students who meet entry requirements may enter National Merit Scholarship competitions as well as other programs that give special recognition to high-achieving students.

College Board - Register here for the SAT. This gigantic web site is full of all kinds of college planning information, including a college and scholarship search program, sample SAT and PSAT questions, how to find the right school for you, and financial aid and scholarship information. It even provides detailed information about SAT II Tests and helps you figure out, for example, which Math test you should take.

ACCUPLACER - The ACCUPLACER tests provide students with useful information about their academic skills in math, English, and reading. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with a student's academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine course selection.
