Dr. Nate Carman is the Superintendent of Socorro Independent School District, the second-largest district in Region 19 serving more than 48,000 students in 50 campuses.
Prior to joining SISD, he served as superintendent of San Benito CISD for four years. During his tenure, the SBCISD State Accountability Rating increased 11 points from a 74 to an 85 while increasing the number of TEA Distinctions by double digits, increased the Unassigned General Fund Balance from $17.9 Million to $41.3 Million passed a $40 million bond, created an Early College Academy, established three separate Elementary Academies: STEAM, Fine Arts, and Environmental Academies. Dr. Carman worked hand in hand with the SBCISD Board of Trustees to improve employee benefits during his tenure which included raises each year, a zero premium health insurance plan, the establishment of a wellness plan, increased stipends, a leadership academy which helped grow leaders from within the district, and a commitment to professional development.
Dr. Carman’s first superintendency began in May 2013, in Teague ISD. In all, Dr. Carman has 10 years of experience as a Texas superintendent.
Dr. Carman served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for Pine Tree ISD from 2009 to 2013. Prior to that role, he served as a campus and then district administrator in Grand Prairie ISD, and campus administrator in Wilmer Hutchins ISD and Lewisville ISD.
Dr. Carman’s educational career began in 1994 in Farmington, New Mexico, where he taught math and science and served as the head wrestling coach and assistant football coach at Piedra Vista High School. He began his Texas career in 1999, serving as a math teacher, head wrestling coach, and assistant football coach at RL Turner HS in Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD.
Dr. Carman grew up in Colorado and proudly graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, earning his Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He earned his Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Texas Woman’s University and his Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of North Texas.
Dr. Carman has two children. His son, Brian, is a teacher and coach in Keller ISD. Brian and his wife, Britt, have two sons: Von, age 2 1/2 years and Callum, 6 months old. His daughter, Alexandria, is a mechanical engineer in the Plano area and is married to husband, Calvin.
