Outstanding SISD fine arts programs add to students’ comprehensive educational experiences to enhance their creativity, coordination, and discipline. The programs provide opportunities in music, theater, color guard, dance, and visual arts, in which SISD students consistently excel at the highest level of competition.

In 2021-22, SISD led the region with 15 students earning recognition as 2022 TMEA all-state musicians. Six SISD dancers represented the district for the first time at the 2022 TDEA convention performing among the best of the best in the state. Five SISD mariachi ensembles advanced to the highly competitive 2022 UIL state mariachi competition. Three high school band ensembles were chosen to perform at prestigious national and international music conferences. Two high school theater arts stage crews were selected for the 2022 UIL All-State Honor Crew competition. A Socorro High School student won the 2022 Congressional Art Contest, and her artwork is displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Nine students were selected as outstanding performers in the 2022 UIL Texas All-State Solo and Ensemble competition. Three students had their artwork selected to be displayed during Youth Art Month at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. Sixteen SISD high school students advanced to the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event and 10 middle school students earned Platinum Awards in the citywide Junior VASE competition.

In addition, the SISD Fine Arts department is consistently recognized, having earned the Best Communities for Music Education Award for six consecutive years and for the first time winning the 2021 TAEA District of Distinction for engaging students with visual arts.

Fine Arts Programs Offered in SISD

SISD students in all grade-levels from elementary to high school can participate in diverse fine arts programs. The opportunities are varied and enriching, giving students experience in unique programs such as piano, guitar, mariachi, fiddle, digital art – photography, design and animation, and ballet, just to name a few. SISD is the only area school district that offers theater production at the middle school level, including UIL One Act Play competition. SISD’s elementary fine arts program consists of an engaging music, art and theater collaboration giving the district’s youngest students a strong foundation in the arts.
